When I try to remotely resurrect him with the console, it has nothing to find so I have to basically "reinstall" him via reference IDs and black magic, recycle the actor and then everyone is happy and he's alive again - until I step into the Blue Palace. To clarify: He simply disappears from the world and is flagged as dead - his wife and child at Bits and Pieces go into their mourner dialogue, everyone who was friends with him has the "My friend died." line enabled, and the apprentice blacksmith takes up his new role as the smithing vendor.
